Where do you start with Skincare?

Skincare can get complex. When it comes to locking down a skincare routine, it can be extremely overwhelming—there are thousands of products out there! How do you know which ones will be right for your skin type? Which ingredients will work best for your skin? Are the products well-formulated? The questions are endless. Thats why here At The Clinic@ Ebano Ballinteer we  take a 360 degree approach to your skin health and we are firm believers of bringing it back to basics with everyone before introducing stronger more results driven products and treatments.

There has been huge awareness in the last few years about the importance of looking after our skin.  The problem nowadays is that people are hearing about products and ingredients such as Retinol and Glycolic and proceeding to purchase these but not having the basics in their routine, Therefore they are actually causing their skin more damage in the long run.

Don’t get me wrong, I swear by these ingredients and they are the key to achieving results but I think its essential to get a basic skin care routine perfect first.

Every day we get clients coming in asking do they need to double cleanse, how often should they exfoliate, do they  need to wear SPF everyday, whats the difference between a serum and a moisturiser. We are going to strip it back to basics and give you our top tips on how to get the basics right, as they are your foundation for optimal skin health.

So where do you begin with your skincare regime? Getting these core steps right is the key to success.

1. Cleansing your skin, It is your first step is any skin care regime. It should be carried out every morning, evening and before and after exercise. Don’t cut corners with your cleansing routine by using wipes or micellular water, use the correct cleanser and texture that is most suited to your skin. Foam cleansers are best for oily skins and Cream cleansers are best for normal to dry skin types. Often people just wash their face with water in the morning and don’t use their cleanser, this is not sufficient as over night your skin produces oil that should be cleansed off prior to applying your day cream.

Our Skin expert’s Top Tip: Should you double cleanse? The answer is yes! It is a fundamental step in everyones skin care regime that allows the products penetrate into your skin. There is no point applying serums and creams on top of make up residue and trapped oil on your skin, they are going to waste.

2. The second  product every person should have is a Broad Spectrum SPF in their skin care routine which is applied daily. UV exposure is responsible for 80% of visible aging of our skin. Whether we live in a cloudy or sunny climate, applying sunscreen to your face daily is critical for long term vitality. Making small changes like wearing proper SPF  is something you will thank yourself for in later years.

Our Skin expert’s Top Tip: A lot of people are unaware that SPF in make up products are generally not enough as it is a low percentage and you would have to use a large quantity to make it actually work.

3. At night our skin has 8 hours to repair and rebuild while we sleep. This is why using a suitable night serum or cream is important.  What is a the difference between a serum and moisturiser? A serum contains a higher proportional concentration of active ingredients and is designed to treat a specific concern. They are lightweight moisturisers that penetrate deeper to deliver active ingredients into the skin. A moisturiser is there to hydrate the top layers of the skin. Ideally it is best to apply a serum and moisturiser at night but this is completely dependant on what your skin needs.

Now once you have these basics, you can add in the results driven ingredients to get you where you want to be with your skin. What are my ‘go tos’ for achieving results?

  • Retinol- the holy grail of skin care. This is the game changer and although there is a process where your skin has to adapt to the product, once you stick with it, the results will speak for themselves. It reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and improves texture and tone by stimulating collagen production and speeding cell turnover. This formula also targets acne-prone skin, minimises pore size appearance and evens skin tone.

I personally love the Alumier MD 0.5 retinol serum as it is micro-encapsulated using cutting-edge technology to allow for a gradual timed release into the skin overnight. By encapsulating the retinol and adding soothing and hydrating ingredients like aloe, tea extracts, honey and vitamin B3, maximal results can be achieved with minimal irritation.

  • Image Skincare Iluma lightening Serum

If you haven’t heard or tried this serum before, I guarantee once you get your hands on it, it will be once you cant live without! This lightweight, oil free serum is suitable for all skin types. It targets skin discolouration and redness and helps to even out the tone in our complexion. This is a must have for everyones skin care regime, its blend of botanical lighteners, vitamin C and grape seed extract gently reduces inflammation which therefore promotes a clear and fresh looking complexion.

As our weather is so changeable and our skin is put through many environmental changes, our skin often lacks hydration. Coo lifting is a  simple, effective and non-invasive treatment is a 5 minute treatment that boosts hydration. The treatment involves the application of hyaluronic onto the skin by means of CO2 at high pressure and low temperature. This boost of hydration is immediate, leaving your skin instantly glowing and lifted. Results include immediate smoothing of the skin, eliminating superficial wrinkles, instant glow and following by a lasting rejuvenating effect.

For people looking to get a professional skin treatment done and don’t know what to ask for, I would recommend you first seek a skin consultation with a professional. This service is where a professional will access your skin and advise you on what treatments you should get in order to achieve the desired results. In this you can talk about the budget you have and go from there. Here are The Clinic we make bespoke treatment plans for each and every client, incorporating a range of different treatments we offer in order to get the best results for every client.
